The design of the Civic Center mediates between the open system of the park and the boundary of the historical buildings of the Isola District. The edges of this boundary are strongly influenced by the urban neighborhood adjoining the park and by the substantial buildings both existing and planned for the Garibaldi-Isola District. The project area is not totally occupied by our building. It defines, with its net margins, new open spaces that are in synergy with the existing ones. The new empty spaces trace the relationship between the size of the park and the city. These spaces of mediation are strongly characterized as places and are defined in order to enable an open dialogue between the city and the park. The building has a compact shape and is compressed on its edges creating a system of spatial transition between what is built and the green of the park system. The exterior facade is composed of recycled Milanese. The facade becomes the story and memory of the city. The choice of materials used for the building systems allow for maximum environmental sustainability and lower energy consumption.
